Our original blog written in October 2018 linked to a reliable (Forbes article) source about SEO mistakes to avoid.  As of May 2021 the Forbes article has not been updated since it was written. Leaving many items in their article as no longer being true.

Between January 2020 and June 2021 SEO has been turned on its head by Google.

Webprem decided to rewrite this blog in May 2021 with recent real world experiences for “SEO Mistakes to Avoid”.  Some of these observations are not easily found in other resources.

Number #1 SEO Mistake to Avoid

Picking a keyword phrase that has very little monthly traffic

Between 2011 to 2019 Webprem was so very proud of our main keyword phrase. We tracked that keyword phrase and found that Webprem ranked on the first page of Google for that particular keyword phrase. We even confirmed that some of our clients found us by searching for that particular keyword phrase. What Webprem failed to understand is that keyword phrase had a monthly average search traffic equal to only 10 searches per month. Luckily we were kept busy by multiple referrals, or we might have noticed that fact earlier.

How to Select the Best Keyword Phrase

Answer Depends on Business Niche

Answer is Obvious FOR Certain Business Niches

One of our clients is “Maximum Performance Auto Repair”.

  • They are located on the South Hill of Puyallup
  • They have been in business since 1994.
  • Within their business niche it is easy to understanding their number one keyword phrase should be “Auto Repair South Hill Puyallup”.
    • Using Google Chrome (in Incognito mode) the Google search results display “Maximum Performance” as the first non-ad business.
  • Another keyword phrase for them is “Auto Repair Puyallup”.
    • Using Google Chrome (in Incognito mode) the Google search results display “Maximum Performance” on the first page.
  • Another keyword phrase for them is “Auto Repair Near Me” which is really useful for people living in their vicinity.
    • Using Google Chrome (in Incognito mode) the Google search results show “Maximum Performance” on the first page (for people living in their vicinity).
Answer is RESEARCH & TOOLS for Other Business Niches

I am going to use our business “Webprem” as an example.

  • Webprem has been in business since 2011.
  • Our location may be changing so that needs to be factored in.
  • Webprem is a web design company, but also provides additional services that are important to the success of our clients.
  • Our business model allows us to easily work remotely.
  • SEO for Webprem is simpler (and harder) than it looks One important option for SEO for Webprem is “Competitive Keyword Analysis”.
    • A company like Webprem first should identify competition in local area(s) (current as well as future) as well as competitors nationally
