Cufon Issues in IE9

Cufon was used prior to Google Fonts.  Back in 2011, when this blog was written, Cufon was often used to display headings using eye pleasing fonts. There are probably not too many websites left that use Cufon anymore.  When Internet Explorer 9 was released in 2011 websites viewed using IE 9 that used Cufon font replacement displayed sections with blank text. This blog was to document a solution to the Cufon issue.

Back in 2011 there was a tool found at Netrenderer by GeoTek Datentechnik that allowed people to view how their webpage looked in different versions of Internet Explorer,

When using Netrenderer, please don’t forget to add /index.php if you are trying to generate a preview for a WordPress site and are using mod_rewrite to generate SEO (Search Engine Friendly) Permalinks.

For example – if your url address is enter in the box.

To fix the problem do the following:

First: Download and use the latest version of cufon-yui.js (the current version is 1.09i).

Second: Add the following conditional statement into your site’s header:

<!--[if gte IE 9]>
     <script type="text/javascript">
        Cufon.set('engine', 'canvas');

before all Cufon.replace() calls.
